Marty Newell begins by remembering his childhood in the coal company town of Highsplint, and discusses moving to Whitesburg at a time when the region was receiving a great deal of media attention. He remembers the beginnings of Appalshop, his travels to film for the General Convention Youth Program, and how these influenced his thinking about politics, regional identity, and cultural work.
