Description

Anne Lewis, a filmmaker associated with Appalshop, Inc., discusses her life in filmmaking and finding her way to Appalachia from Washington, D.C. She talks about discovering the direction she wanted her life to take after traveling around Mexico and attending the School of Visual Arts in New York. She found her way working for well-known artists, such as Paul Falkenburg and Barbara Kopple, and tells the story of how she discovered Appalshop, Inc. while working on "Harlan County, USA" with Kopple in Harlan County, Kentucky. She illustrates the process of filming and directing various films that she has worked on while working for Appalshop, Inc. throughout the eighties as well as the impact those films have had, not only on her but on the communities the films surround and the subjects of films.
