Hall gives the name of grandparents and parents. Her grandmother was of Cherokee Indian descent. Hall has four sisters and two brothers. Hall's father was a coal miner who worked in various mines.

Growing up in the coalfields, Hall felt underprivileged. Her parents worked very hard so that Hall and her siblings could graduate high school. Her mother canned a lot of food every year. Norris asks Hall to consider whether her low self-esteem was related to her American Indian Heritage.

Hall discusses overcoming stereotypes against American Indians. She has taught her grandchildren about their heritage. She likes to visit other tribes and likes the crafts on display. Hall feels that Native Americans have to feel inferior because every tribe has been treated so badly.
