Rampage to become a space odyssey
By Rose Dombransky
"The Year 2001" will be the theme of Rampage '73 which kicks off officially Oct. 31 and runs until Nov. 4. Lectures, movies, dorm decoration contests, a dance, concert, the Rampage parade and the homecoming football game are among the activities planned. Rod Serling will open the weekend on Oct. 31, with a lecture in Hollinger Field House at 8 p.m. His topic will be "The 20th Century and Other Insanities." An informal coffee house will be held in the afternoon in the Commuter Lounge. Dr. George Reed of the Department of Earth and Space Science will host "An Evening in the Planetarium," Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. He will examine the ecological outlook for the future in his lecture, "Doomsday: 2001." The judging of dorm decorations will take place Nov. 2 in the afternoon. Decorations will focus on the Rampage theme and cash prizes will be awarded to the winning resident halls. From noon to 5:30 p.m. in Philips Auditorium Nov. 2, there will be a special showing of "2001: A Space Odyssey," followed by "Silent Running" and "The Omega Man." The same science fiction flicks will again be shown starting at midnight that evening. At 8 p.m. there will be a dance in Hollinger Field House. Tony Dee's Rock and Roll Circus will perform a complete show of the music of the '50's and '60's. The dance will be free to all students with exchange of coupon at the IGA Ticket Office and $.50 for guests. It will cost $1.00 at the door. Parade step-off time will be 10 a.m., Nov. 3. In the Rampage tradition, sororities, fraternities and clubs will enter floats in the parade. Local high school bands and West Chester's Marching Band will perform. This year's parade will have something which no previous Rampage parade had, individual students participating. Students may dress in costume, decorate bicycles, make floats or form walking groups of five or more people and compete for prizes. There is a $10 entry fee for floats, $.50 for bicycles and walking entries and a dollar for walking groups of 5 or more. On Saturday West Chester will host Hillsdale at Farrell Stadium at 1:30 p.m. A free buffet supper will follow in Lawrence Center at 4:30 p.m. for commuter students. The Steve Miller Band and Country Gazette will be in concert at Hollinger Field House at 8:00 p.m. The price will be $3.50 for students with ID and coupon C and $4.50 for guests. The program for Rampage weekend is student oriented and planned to get as many individuals as possible involved.
