Description

John Braxton discusses his upbringing and his experiences as an activist during the Vietnam War. Braxton was raised as a Quaker in Philadelphia. He went to Swarthmore university where he soon became a peace activist. Braxton was a part of the crew of the ship the Phoenix. He sailed from Japan to North Vietnam to deliver medical supplies as an act of civil disobedience. He later was sent to jail for refusing to participate in the draft. There he organized prisoners and was part of a "riot." Braxton also experienced long periods of solitary confinement due to his role in the "inmate council" at the first prison he was in. Upon release, Braxton has continued his activism and calls for peace.
